Oil paintings by Suzanne Chong

Ricefield Arts and Cultural Centre is pleased to exhibit the works of prolific Hong Kong oil painter, Suzanne Chong, in her upcoming solo exhibition, Fly.
This exhibition will portray Chong’s response to a confrontation of eastern and western morals and the complexities this brings to her concept of female identity.
Chinese motifs and classical western symbolism are blended together in Chong’s ‘own coded autobiography’, which explores a struggle between traditional propriety and the liberation of women from their accepted roles as wives and mothers. Chong's representations of the female form are sexually charged, provocative, yet veils of anonymity and a vacuum of darkness as the common background depersonalise the figures, rendering them trapped between desire and obligation.
Born and raised in Hong Kong in a time of rapid development and change influenced by the west, Chong studied Fine Art at the University of Dundee before completing an MA in Museum Studies at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Now based in Scotland, Fly is a very personal account of how her traditional upbringing has been altered through exposure to the liberalism of the west.'
